Does Kibble Help Clean Dog Teeth?Updated 5 months ago
It is commonly believed that the crunchy texture of dry kibble helps to clean a dog's teeth. However, there is little evidence to suggest this is true. Most softer foods (including kibble, including Frontier Pet's food) can contribute to the development of plaque (the slimy coating you feel on your teeth if you haven’t brushed them), which can lead to dental disease if not removed. Like for humans the type of diet you eat influences your oral health. Our holistic vet considers that feeding biologically appropriate, whole foods naturally low in carbohydrates will be helpful as an aid to prevent dental disease. Regular tooth brushing removes plaque and aids dental hygiene. There are some specially formulated dry dog and cat foods (specific dental foods) that are designed to remove dental plaque. Bones are natural toothbrushes for dogs and cats so regular bone chewing, and other hard chews help to keep teeth clean.
